Niamh and Seamus keep it in the family!

May 10, 2010

Niamh and Seamus O’Boyle took the two senior titles at the 2010 Leinster champs held on Carlingford mountain this weekend.

Niamh had a clean run in the womens elite race to win by a margin of 12 minutes over Fermo’s Rosalind Hussey, with Ruth Lynam taking third place.

Not to be outdone, Niamh’s younger brother Seamus proved that regular climbing practice could be the secret to future Irish orienteering success by taking a win in the Mens elite race. Runner up was 3Roc runner Gerard Butler and third went to GEN elite David Healy.

Full Leinster champs results an be found on the Irish orienteering website.

There was a very large turnout for this popular championship fixture РThe kind spring weather,  world class challenging terrain and effort put in by the organising club 3Roc all made for an excellent event!

Competitors enjoyed a fabulous evening in the park with head to head racing through the 70m by 70m labyrinth and the choice of 4 fast and furious sprint courses around the park.

Thanks to Igor’s small army of helpers – Izabela, Milan, Andrea and Katarina. Also thanks to LVO for supporting the event.

Slievenagore - orienteering in the heart of the Mournes

Saturdays Green course at Slievenagore

85 competitors enjoyed 3 courses in the sun at the first event in the Carlingford lough weekend.
The green course saw 63 orienteers competing on the slopes of Slievengore.
The intricate contour detail and granite workings caught many out with carefull navigation paying off.

The Irish senior squad were visiting for the weekend and took the top 3 places with CorkO runner Darren Burke fastest with 33.51, 3Roc’s Gerard Butler next on 35.59 and fastest female Irish elite Niamh O’Boyle close behind on 36.16.

A highlight of the day was surely the sprint string course, which is now becoming an LVO favorite enjoyed by young and old alike – well done to all who took on the mighty string course!
LVO’s Declan McGrellis was leading for much of the day on 1.15mins and looked like holding off the flying Irish senior team members untill Gerard Butler (1.12mins) and Colm Hill (1.11mins) put a bit more gas in the tank!

A big thankyou to Kieran Rocks for helping set-up on the day and manning the start. Declan, Jack, Alex, Mark, James and Eoghan for collecting controls. Mandy and Harry for the great work on the computers and the Gamekeepers lodge for providing car-parking.

Saturday evening MicrO – Irish senior team fundraiser

March 10, 2010

Ultrasprint at its best!

The MicrO sprint event to be held in Kilbroney on Saturday evening will be helping raise funds to help the Irish team compete in Norway at the World championships in August.

Planner Igor Stefko planned a similar event in the Kilbroney park last year and feels that the venue is the perfect setting for this spectator friendly form of the sport.

All competitors are promised exciting courses which will test your skills to the maximum!
